Managing Intellectual Property

TCG has developed and implemented policies and procedures for effective protection of intellectual property to derive value from these inventions.  Recently, TCG assisted a major Midwestern public university in benchmarking its intellectual property and technology transfer practices to identify areas for improvement.

Proper institutional policies are necessary to ensure the protection of the institutional mission as well as to manage conflicts-of-interest. Choices must be made as to which to derive value from these inventionsinventions can and should be protected through patents recognizing the costs and value of worldwide filings.   And, a viable commercialization strategy must be devised which may involve out-licensing to an established company or the creation of a start-up, with close and continuing ties to the research institution. The choices are critical, but the most successful institutions are those with effective intellectual property policies and high quality implementation procedures.

TCG has developed a unique financial planning model for technology transfer functions in academic and other research institutions.  The model is based on workload generating events,  the organization’s historical and current cost and workload data, and growth projections as a starting point.  TCG has applied this model successfully for a number of university clients across the US.

Our team of has years of research administration experience as consultants and as leaders of research management and technology transfer programs at major universities, non-profit organizations and governmental research agencies in the US and Europe.
