Commercial Assessment of Technologies
TCG has done numerous projects assessing the value of technologies prior to undertaking the costly efforts of patent protection and out-licensing. Recently, we provided technology valuation and marketing services for several corporations as well as an international agency involved in converting weapons and defense research in the former Soviet Union into valuable civilian technology and products.
The complete evaluation of technology must balance the possibility of commercial success against the cost of protecting, marketing and ultimately licensing the technology. Not all scientific inventions are commercially valuable to global companies. In order to identify the high value technologies, it is essential to review the landscape of competing technologies within the context of how the specific industry would utilize the application and create value. Financially viable technologies are those that provide a barrier to entry while permitting the industry participant the ability to compete in new markets or to compete more efficiently in existing markets.
TCG’s team has done scores of new technology evaluations, both as consultants and as senior leaders of research management and technology transfer programs at non-profit research entities and for multi-national corporations (including DuPont, Johnson & Johnson, FMC and Smith Kline).
